On politics and geography
Apr. 7th, 2008 04:00 pmI have heard many negative comments from people in Russia on the decision by the NATO to build missile defense installations in Poland (sometimes other countries in the Eastern Europe are named, including (eventually) Ukraine) recently. The usual one goes like this, "You are telling us that this missile defense is built against ballistic missiles which could come from Iran. But it is obvious that you are doing it against us (Russia) and our missiles". Well, quite frankly, I would not mind having an extra defense against the Russian missiles for both the U.S. and Europe. And why should I? But that's not the point I am trying to make right now. I am sick and tired of hearing about these missile defense systems in Poland and Ukraine which will protect America from the Russian ballistic missiles. The laws of physics tell us that for any ballistic trajectory the initial and final point, the whole trajectory, and the center of the Earth are contained in the same plane. In plain English, this means the following. If you take a globe and stretch a thread between the starting and the ending point of a ballistic trajectory, the thread will show you the trajectory itself. I have done this for a trajectory from Tehran to Washington. You can repeat this experiment yourself, but you can also take a look at the picture below:
The trajectory goes right through Poland and Ukraine. On the other hand, a ballistic trajectory starting from, let's say, Novosibirsk and passing through Warsaw would end up just touching South America:

Therefore, having an anti-missile base in Poland or Ukraine would be indeed optimal for protecting the U.S.A. from Iran, but could not be used against Russian missiles - unless these missiles are fired at Poland and Ukraine themselves. And missiles from Russia to the U.S. would fly over the Arctic region, thus a defense against them would have to be built in Canada.
