Kerry said Israel had the right to fight back against Hamas' efforts to use tunnels to surreptitiously ferry fighters from Gaza into Israel.

"You have a right to go in and take out those tunnels," he said. "We completely support that and we support Israel's right to defend itself against rockets that are continuing to come in." Kerry said it is up to Hamas to agree to a truce.

"It is important for Hamas to now step up and be reasonable [bold мoй] and understand that you accept the cease-fire, you save lives," he said.

Kerry said Sunday that the U.S. supports the Egyptian proposal for a halt to the hostilities that Israel accepted and Hamas rejected last week. Hamas remains deeply suspicious of the motives of the Egyptian government, which has banned the region-wide Muslim Brotherhood, to which Hamas also belongs.
